Online ticket sales close at midnight on March 4.

Please check out the Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival being held by Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (UCR), Georgia River Network (GRN) and Georgia ForestWatch (GFW). You can see the trailers here.

Several inspirational and motivational films of varying lengths will be presented on Sunday afternoon, March 7, 2010 from 2:00-5:30 PM at the Tara Theater in Atlanta. The program will highlight two longer length films among several shorter works. What’s Organic About Organic? (60 min.) looks beyond the eco-label of the grocery store to see how organic farming benefits our land and communities; the film also exposes hidden costs of conventional agriculture. In the documentary Bag It (50 min.) an average guy makes the resolution to stop using plastic bags at the grocery – but that’s just the beginning.

In addition to these and other films, the festival on tour in Atlanta welcomes photographer and writer Holt Webb and his eco-friendly motor home BABS, who will be on-site at the Tara Theater from noon until 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, to share his Vanishing America Project promoting conservation and educating others about the wildlife and culture we are losing.

Also, as a special treat, patrons with a valid ID will be served complimentary SweetWater beverages inside the theater.

You can get the latest details at the UCR site or head straight to the ticket ordering page here.

Chattahoochee River Second Annual Summer Splash

On July 25, Paddle Anywhere will be taking on the Chattahoochee River again for the National Park Service Second Annual Summer Splash (Details).

UPDATE: We had a great trip. Steve, Sean, and Karen took two epoxy YOLO stand up paddleboards and one YOLOyak down the river. The water was clear and running with a litlle  current. We saw turtles, blue heron, and carp. We also paddled by just in time to see a a guy in a boat catch a big striper. The only shoals we had trouble with were at the very end at Cochran Shoals (pictured below). It was no trouble to get around the rocks by walking or finding an alternate course on the river. We all took a little spill at some point on the shoals but it was nice to cool off at the end of the 6-mile trip.

Stand Up Paddle Atlanta Sunday July 12

This July 12 trip turned into a real adventure. Steve, Sean, Joe, and Dan started at Buford Dam and planned to paddle to Lake Lanier Resort. Dan was visiting from Florida, happened to see the Stone Mountain website, and got in touch. Joe is a surfer from Dahlonega and a member of the Atlanta Surf Posse. We may not have pegged the adventure meter on this one, but we got it into the red.

We paddled over 8 miles  roundtrip. We had some beers and food at Lake Lanier resort and all appeared to be going well. Unfortunately, a not so little storm popped up, and the trip home turned into a beast of a paddle straight into wind and white caps. We made it back to the dam about about 930pm. Check out the historical wind report here. The wind maxed out at 25 mph with gusts over 30mph. You get the idea.

We had a great laugh about it once we got back to the cars. We got the boards strapped down right before the storm unleashed.
