Surfrider Barefoot Wine River Cleanup Event

Barefoot Wine and the Surfrider Foundation invite you to take part in a river cleanup on August 7 to keep Atlanta Barefoot-Friendly! Come lend a hand (or foot) then celebrate your efforts. After the River Cleanup, all volunteers will be treated to Barefoot Wine and Bubbly and tasty beach treats at Cheyenne Grill.

When: Saturday, August 7, 2010. The River Cleanup Event is 9AM to Noon. The Celebration is 4PM to 6PM.

Location for River Cleanup: Chattahoochee River Park at Paces Mill. The approximate address is 4549 Cobb Pkwy SE, Vinings, GA. (Map) (Driving Directions)

Location for the Celebration: Cheyenne Grill at 2391 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, GA. (Map)

Registration: IMPORTANT: Please register at the Barefoot Wine event page here. Alternatively, you can respond below in the comments section to let us know you are coming. We will take care of the rest. Please specify if you will be attending the Cleanup, the Celebration, or both.

Additional Information: Space is limited. Please register early. The National Park Service will be providing canoes and cleanup materials. Riverkeeper Race 2010 Pics

We had a great time at the Riverkeeper Race this weekend on the Chattahoochee River. Susan and Steve, and their respective sons, represented Surfrider Foundation on their YOLO stand up paddleboards. There was one other stand up paddleboarder on a C4 Waterman. Riverkeeper said they would add a class next year for SUPs. Stay tuned for race results.

UPDATE: We placed first in our categories. No comment on how many boats were in our categories. First is first.

Riverkeeper Chattahoochee River Race & Festival 2010

Paddlers of all ages and skill levels will take to the water on Saturday, June 12, for the 8th Annual Back to the Chattahoochee River Race and Festival.

UPDATE: The image gallery from the event is posted HERE.

The race course begins at Garrard Landing Park on Holcomb Bridge Road and ends at Riverside Park in Roswell, the site of the festival, music and the awards presentation.

June 8 is the last day to register online. Register HERE. Registration fees are $40 online and $50 onsite. Registration onsite is subject to availability. The Festival is free.

Equipment: Participants must provide their own craft, Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), and paddles. All racers must pass an equipment inspection the morning of the race.

Paddle Anywhere will provide FREE stand up paddleboards for anyone who wants to join him on the river. Contact us through the contact page here.

Surfing Blue Mountain Beach, Florida Pre-Oil

Steve Combs report from Blue Mountain Beach, Florida: The waves were blown out all weekend. I went to the Destin Emergency Responders Information Session on behalf the Surfrider Foundation to hear the plans for dealing with the oil. I felt like we were just waiting inside the castle walls for the siege to begin. I caught a few waves with some old friends and tried to forgot about all the oil headed our way. This may be the last time these beaches are surfable for a very long while. Very sad. More information about the oil spill is available at www.surfrideratlanta.org.

Check out the video from a stand up paddle trip down the the Etowah River on April 3, 2010. The trip was co-hosted by the Georgia Canoeing Association and Outdoor Adventure Club of the South. Good people, good times.

I’ve got a little interview at the beginning. At the 5 minute mark, my fin gets stuck between two rocks, and I go head first down the rapids. I’ve torn fins off my board on my last two whitewater trips. I plan on trying the YOLOyak or ULI inflatable on my next trip.
